OAC Services Tops List of 100 Best Companies to Work For in Washington State

If you aren’t in the architecture, engineering and construction industry, you may have never heard of OAC Services, Inc. We are a sixty-year-old, employee-owned construction management, architecture and engineering firm. OAC is headquartered in Seattle, with offices in Olympia and Spokane, and Silicon Valley, CA.

OAC just pulled off an incredible feat – we were just chosen as No. 2 in Washington (medium-size businesses) by Seattle Business Magazine’s prestigious “100 Best Companies to Work For” awards. This is the second year in a row that OAC made the list – we were an impressive 14th last year.

There’s a reason why OAC rocketed to the top.

OAC staff gave the firm top marks in the ten topics that companies are judged on. More than 34,000 employees from firms across Washington took part in the 2017 anonymous survey. Firms are rated by their own employees, in the areas of performance, communication, training and education, decision-making, rewards and recognition, benefits, leadership, work environment, hiring and retention, and corporate culture. The results are then analyzed by Tiger Oak Media. OAC scored high in every category – higher than most other midsize companies and higher than firms within their industry.

This makes OAC’s accomplishment all the more impressive – we weren’t just competing against other design firms, but any company in the state with 40 to 100 employees.

“The reason why OAC has had this sudden, stunning recognition is it is truly a different kind of company – it really is. It’s a place where almost every month, we’re out in the community giving back, a place where highly intelligent people collaborate to improve where people live, work, learn and play,” said Wesley Bergquist, a Senior Project Manager at OAC.

Last night, more than forty employees from OAC were invited on stage to accept the award at Seattle Business Magazine’s award gala at the Washington State Convention Center.

“The reason why we received this award is simple. OAC believes in our employees and sees them as whole people, individuals who need balance between their personal and professional lives, who need recognition and education. Being able to work for a company that is out in the community, donating time and energy is gratifying,” offered Marta Dzheneva, OAC Senior Project Engineer.

The focus on people – employees, clients, industry partners – and the community translated into a huge win for OAC. They are the only architecture or engineering firm in the top 10, and they climbed more than 10 spots in just a year.

“It’s our employees,” Shawn Mahoney, OAC’s Managing Principal, said, “we’re all employees. It’s our company. How it is run, how it operates, who it recognizes, how it educates and gives back, all that makes up our culture. That’s why we’ve been recognized. We were recognized first by our employees, and now we’re seeing that the culture we all built, that we know is exemplary, is being acknowledged by the wider business community. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate than with our employees – this is their award.”
