OAC’s Grace Wong coauthors “Moisture Analysis in Unconditioned Concrete”

OAC’s very own Grace Wong, PE, AIA, LEED AP, coauthored with Kip Gatto, PE, SE, (from Wiss Janney, Elstner Associates) the featured technical article for RCI, Inc.’s October RCI Interface publication. Titled “Moisture Analysis in Unconditioned Concrete”, the article proposes a new approach to evaluating the acceptability of unconditioned concrete surfaces to receive adhesives and coatings. These applications are crucial to the performance of the building envelope; however, there is currently little industry guidance on how to determine how much moisture is acceptable in unconditioned concrete for these applications.

The article explains a study developed by Wong and Gatto to determine the threshold and acceptance criteria of moisture in unconditioned concrete. The article discusses analyses performed on a variety of unconditioned concrete surfaces – from concrete slabs on ground to concrete roof decks. It then details a new analytical framework to more accurately gauge and assess the level of concrete moisture that is acceptable for coating applications.
