Project Overview

The Quillayute Valley School District faced a variety of challenges with interior water intrusion and deteriorating exterior wall elements at their existing high school and middle school buildings with some areas having leaked since they were first built.  They wanted to avoid these problems on their new high school addition and turned to OAC for help getting the roof and exterior wall systems designed and built right the first time.

The new addition connects to the section of the school constructed in 2000 and wraps around the existing outdoor student courtyard, enclosing the courtyard and completing the circulation loop.  The 39,500 square foot addition consists of six new classrooms, new administrative offices, a student library, and special needs facilities.  A new multi-purpose gym facility and weight room was also added.  The building’s envelope includes rainscreen siding, masonry, precast concrete panels, thermally improved glazing, and exterior rigid insulation.

OAC assisted the design and construction team by developing customized building envelope details that utilize materials and products suitable for application during damp weather and will accommodate the strong winds and heavy rains that are common in Forks.  Detailing of continuous weather and air barrier systems including isometric details of end conditions and pre-construction mock-ups were encouraged by OAC.  Effective flashings solutions were developed for the storefront and window openings including provisions for leaky window units.  OAC coordinated field water testing of select storefront and window assemblies to verify the quality of glazing installations.
