Project Overview

In 2013, OAC’s structural engineers were part of a consultant team responsible for the assessment of overwater structures at eight different waterfront parks on Lake Washington for the Kirkland Parks Department. OAC was responsible for the assessment of 10 overwater structures over the 8 parks, which included timber-framed and concrete dock, pier and swim platform superstructures supported by timber piles. OAC teamed with Associated Earth Sciences Inc. (geotechnical engineer and project lead), and Waterfront Construction (responsible for diving inspections of existing piles).

As lead structural engineer, OAC was responsible for documenting the condition of the piers, docks and other overwater structures at the series of parks included in the study. Field work consisted of detailed visual observation and documentation of superstructure, mapping the profile of the structure with sonar, and coordinating with the divers during the subsurface inspections of the supporting timber piles and wavebreaks.

Along with the other consultants, OAC prepared a report summarizing findings. Issues related to public safety were at the top of the list of concerns of the Kirkland Parks Department. Overwater structures were rated in terms of condition, life safety risk, life expectancy and short and long term remediation options with associated costs. Findings were summarized in a detailed report. This project is ongoing; the Kirkland Parks department is currently reviewing the data produced in the initial phase of the study in order to assist with prioritizing future repair work at the parks.
