Project Overview

Shortly after construction of Salish Hall began, the project team decided that assistance from a building envelope consultant was necessary due to the building’s complex envelope systems and details.  Because of the State’s prior experience with OAC on similar projects, OAC was retained to help with envelope detailing, construction observations, and field testing.

Salish Hall is a new educational facility that houses business, fine arts, humanities, and social science divisions.  The new facility replaces six buildings built in the late 1960’s which were no longer able to support the school’s instructional demands.  By providing improved classrooms, labs, studios, offices, and support spaces, Salish Hall will better meet student needs.  The building’s envelope includes rainscreen siding, brick masonry, thermally improved glazing, and exterior rigid insulation for improved thermal efficiency.

OAC assisted the design and construction teams develop solutions for several challenging envelope conditions and provided periodic construction observations.  Effective storefront flashings schemes were developed to accommodate perimeter structural frames and included provisions for storefront frame leakage.  Unique waterproofing details and products were used at the main lobby curtain wall system and the internal gutter on a butterfly section of the metal roof.

OAC coordinated field water testing of select storefront, curtain wall, and skylight systems to verify the quality of glazing installations.  Water was provided on the window exteriors using calibrated spray racks and a chamber and vacuum were used on the window interiors to simulate the effects of wind driven rain.  Several deficiencies and contractor omissions where identified and corrected through this testing.
