Project Overview

The St. Mary’s Coptic Church is an Egyptian Orthodox church, located just off I-5 in Lynnwood, WA. The structure includes a steel framed dome, roof, and floor supported by concrete and masonry walls. In May, 2007, the dome sustained a fire which damaged the west side of the dome structure. As a requirement for repair, Snohomish County building department required that the damage be evaluated by a structural engineer.

Following the fire event, the St. Mary’s congregation asked OAC to investigate the damage sustained by the structure in the fire, and to make a determination as to the post-fire structural integrity of the dome. The information collected during our investigation was to be used in the first party property insurance claim for the damage. Based on a comprehensive investigation and testing program developed and executed by OAC, we determined that some of the dome’s members had deformed and had sustained stress increases caused by the fire and needed to be repaired.

Following the preliminary assessment, our services were expanded because we gained the trust of the client, and expressed an understanding of the complex religious and political issues related to the repair and its sequencing. We stayed on as the engineer and architect of record for the fire repairs. This included the design of scaffolding for both the interior and exterior of the dome for access and re-shoring the dome to provide the additional support required and developing a set of detailed structural and architectural drawings to repair the sum of the damage caused by the fire. The drawings were permitted and used for actual repairs, but also used as a basis for a cost estimate for insurance recovery. We also provided expert testimony in meetings with the insurance carrier and their engineer.
