Team OAC Enjoys a Day of Volunteering for YouthCare

More than 40 members of OAC’s staff – from all over the Northwest– came out to tackle some exciting work at a YouthCare’s North Seattle site. With incredible help from Paramount Mechanical and University Mechanical (who donated their services), as well as amazing donations of materials and supplies from Ace Hardware and Mutual Materials, we had several ambitious goals for this exciting day.

The team installed new flooring and upgraded the kitchen lighting with a more energy-efficient bulbs in the kitchen, and refreshed the living room with new curtains.

Outside, the yard crew spruced up the entire site by clearing brush and weeds, creating new flowerbeds, laying bark and mulch, clipping back trees and shrubs, planting new additions, and improving access. Along with these improvements, the crew also installed an entirely new paver planter for a vegetable garden, and a paver planter for veggies, strawberries and herbs. Outside benches were repainted and a pleasant grotto for socializing was improved. New table and chairs were put together and a patio area was fixed up to offer a more pleasing space to sit and enjoy the new landscaping.

Inside, the two upstairs bathrooms received the full treatment. After significant demolition efforts and the removal of the bathtub, tiles, vanity and flooring, the entire bathroom was renovated, including new paint, new lights, a new fan, and new fixtures.

Thanks to University Mechanical, the larger bathroom had shower drains completely rebuilt. Then, the team built a new standup shower, replaced the subfloors, installed new flooring, repainted the walls, installed a new vanity and sink, and added a new mirror and fixtures. With Paramount Mechanical’s help, the old sink was capped off and the new one was connected.

Now, the residents at YouthCare have wonderful vegetable gardens and gardening spaces, fun hangout spots, all new bathrooms and a refreshed kitchen, as well as improvements throughout.

“It was so wonderful to see the transformation that took place,” OAC’s outreach event lead, Wesley Bergquist, said. “This just goes to show you what we can accomplish when we come together and focus our energies on improving our community. We’re all really blessed to be part of this company and to have this chance to give back.”

YouthCare provides a wide range of services for Seattle’s homeless youth, including outreach, basic services, emergency shelters, housing, counseling, education and employment training.
